State law mandates applicants be a citizen of the United States,
be of good moral character, at least 21 and no more than 42 years of age by the start
date of the academy, and shall have an associate degree or have successfully completed
62 semester hours of course work from an accredited college or university.
Applications are currently being accepted. There will be no academy in 2004. Even though it has not been determined when an academy may begin, the preparation for one is underway.
Initial testing includes written tests, physical agility testing, an oral interview board. A thorough background check may be conducted on all applicants who successfully complete the above tests. Polygraph testing, psychological testing, and a medical evaluation, which includes a vision test are given to those applicants offered the position. All testing is scheduled through the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and begins after an academy start date is determined.
Men and women accepted into the 20 week academy will be classified according to merit system guidelines as OHP Cadets, with a salary of $2,500.00 per month. Academy graduates will receive their commissions as sworn officers of the State of Oklahoma. After graduation from the Patrol Academy cadets are reclassified as probationary troopers with a salary of $2,750.00 per month. At the successful completion of a one-year probationary period, members become Oklahoma Highway Patrol Officers at an annual salary of $36,711.00 with a maximum potential of $50,087.00 after 7 years of service.
