Kids Day Out with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol

The ninth annual "Kids Day Out" will take place on Thursday, October 18, 2007, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the Wes Watkins Reservoir recreation area. Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers, members of COHPS (Concerned Oklahomans for the Highway Patrol Society), and the Oklahoma State Troopers Association will host a day of education and fun for selected youth from the Shawnee area.

Students will participate in a water safety presentation by the OHP Lake Patrol to prepare them for rides on various OHP Lake Patrol boats. They will also participate in a fishing clinic, receive rods and reels, and will learn to fish with OHP Troopers. Various items have been donated by sponsors of the event for each of the participants. The top fisherman will receive a ride in an OHP helicopter. Trophies will be awarded for other events.

The students will be able to view several OHP exhibits including the helicopter, air and jet boats, dive team, bomb truck and robot, bomb and drug dog presentations, motorcycle, and "Beat the Heat" cars.

There will be special awards presented at 11:45 a.m. to two OHP pilots by Representative Chris Steel on behalf of the Oklahoma House of Representatives for the pilots' rescue efforts during the Kingfisher flooding in August 2007.

Wes Watkins Reservoir is located north of Interstate 40 at exit 176, then follow the signs.
