Injured Oklahoma Highway Patrolman

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Steve Smith was shot by an armed man at a cemetery near Bernice, Oklahoma on Sunday evening.

At 7:15 p.m. on Sunday, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Eddie Rose and Grove Police Department responded to a reported homicide where a body was found in the cemetery. Shortly after they arrived on the scene, an armed man confronted them. The officers directed him to surrender his weapon but he refused. Trooper Smith and the Delaware County Sheriff arrived to assist and during a struggle with the suspect, both officers were wounded from shots fired by the suspect. The suspect then shot and killed himself.

Trooper Smith was shot in the neck and was transported to St. John's Hospital in Joplin, Missouri where he underwent surgery and is listed in critical but stable condition.

Trooper Smith, 37, lives in Pryor with his wife and has three children. He is a graduate of the 48th Patrol academy and has been a trooper for four years.
